Volunteer for Noise Abatement Policy Committee

Obtrusive noise from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK) impacts the quality of life of the citizens of DeKalb County living near the airport.  Currently DeKalb County has no written policy to deal with the noise from this county owned and operated airport.  PDK Watch wants to address this lack of a policy and needs your help.

A Noise Abatement Committee is being formed by PDK Watch to formulate a noise abatement policy for approval by the Board of Commissioners.  The first meeting of this committee is Wednesday, January 21, 1998, at 7:00 P.M. at the Chamblee Library on Clairmont Road.  Volunteers will be asked to commit 1½ to 2 hours at two or three meetings over a three-week period.

If you are interested in this project please plan to join the committee.  For any questions, please call David Green at 770-908-1954.

Land Use Recommendation Put Forth

At the December 3 meeting of the Airport Advisory Board, Carl Scharfe presented an important proposal from Drew Valley Civic Association’s Airport Committee regarding land being acquired through the noise abatement buy out program.  To protect the integrity of the commercial and residential areas near the airport, this committee suggests that a comprehensive plan for the use of the buy out area be developed which does not disturb the current boundaries and usage of PDK and which has input from all affected communities.  They also want full review and approval by the Airport Advisory Board of any plan before its implementation.

Because there was not a quorum present at the last meeting of the advisory board, action was delayed until the next meeting.  Please plan to attend this meeting on January 14 at 6:30 P.M. at the airport to support this proposal by the Drew Valley Civic Association.  As part of the good neighbor policy adopted by the advisory board, the agenda and exact location for each meeting are posted in every DeKalb County library seven to ten days prior to the meeting.

Cost/Benefit Study Complete

An overview of the completed Cost/Benefit Study of PDK was presented to the Board of Commissioners at a December work session.  PDK Watch now has a copy of this lengthy document and is engaged in a thorough review prior to making any comments about the results.

A copy of  the Cost/Benefit Study is in each DeKalb County Library for citizens to read.  A public meeting will be held in March at which time the consultants will make a presentation and answer questions.  Everyone is urged to review this document but especially anyone with expertise in economics.
